Positions and major activities
F. Marques joined the Ceramics and Glass Eng. Dept., University of Aveiro, in 1979 as Lecturer. In 1999 became Full Professor.
Responsibilities held at departmental or university level include Chairman of the University Scientific Council (2006-2009), Vice-Rector (2002-2004), Scientific Coordinator - Research Unit on Ceramic Materials (1998-2001), Pro-Rector (1994-1996), and Head of Department - Ceramics and Glass Engineering (1992-1993).
F. Marques is/was member of scientific committees and session chairman of dozens of international conferences, member of the editorial board of two international journals (Ionics, ISSN: 0947-7047, and the Journal of the Spanish Ceramics and Glass Society, ISSN: 0366-3175) and referee of several dozens of international journals and research organizations.

Main area of research
The main research interest is the study of the relationships between composition, defect structure, working conditions, processing routes, and transport properties of materials usually identified as ionic conductors (mostly oxide, carbonate, and sodium ionic conductors), mixed ionic and electronic conductors, and electronic conductors. These materials are used in energy production, storage and conservation (e.g., sensors, permeating membranes for selective oxygen or CO2 separation, and fuel cells).

2009 - Golden Epsilon (Epsilon de Oro) - award by the Spanish Ceramics and Glass Society
2004 - Stimulus to Excellence (Estímulo à Excelência) - award by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology

Co-author of almost two hundred papers published in international journals, most of them indexed in the Science Citation Index. Co-author also of a few book chapters, dozens of shorter contributions published in Conference Proceedings and a few hundred communications (oral and poster) in International Conferences, including a few dozen invited lectures.
