Tourism is currently one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world, which marks an equally important presence in social, political and environmental terms. However, in order to secure the sustainable growth, competitive position and innovativeness of the sector, scientific and practical underpinning of its planning and development is indispensable.

 

It has been twenty years since the first graduate course was launched in Portugal, which calls for a comprehensive review of scientific production in this area in retrospect, in order to critically analyse the contribution, and delineate future directions.

 

The INVTUR 2010 | Tourism Research: State of the Art and Future Perspectives international conference conference will take place between 10th and 13 March 2010, and aims at providing a unique opportunity to discuss the role of tourism research. Special attention will be given to the production of PhD and MSc dissertations in the world, and its relevance to the industry. 

 

Academics and researchers from all around the world are invited to contribute with papers. Papers may focus in areas such as a the state of the art of tourism research, emerging research areas and issues, national experiences, how tourism research should be oriented in the future, liaisons between tourism research and the tourism sector, etc.  Papers will further be grouped into thematic parallel sessions.

 

The conference aims at creating a forum of discussion where differentiated points of view may be presented. Contributions from mature academics and young researchers are very welcome. In addition to academics, the conference is open to entrepreneurs, investors, organisations and public and private entities that operate in the sector, as well as to employees of public administration.

 

International recognized academics will act as keynote speakers and will provide ground of discussion concerning the importance of tourism research and its value to the industry. The conference will include thematic parallel sessions were a wide variety of papers and international experiences will be presented.

 

The official languages of the conference are english and portuguese.
