Objective
The ORTE Project is a comprehensive action research project in tourism analyzing the nature and dynamics of the rural tourism experience in three hinterland villages as well as the potential of tourism for inducing sustainable development. Stakeholders analysed are the local population and supply agents; village visitors (tourists and excursionists); local and regional development and planning agents. The objective is a better understanding of the nature, dimensions, conditioning factors and impacts of this co-created tourism experience and the assessment of its potential to enhance sustainable rural development. The project identifies conflicts of interest and/ or gaps of perception, as well as gaps between the real and potential rural tourism experience.

Methodology
This project seeks to analyse the rural tourism experience offered by villages that are shaped by distinct geographical, cultural, social, political and economic conditions, in a case-study framework. The first focus is on tourists visiting these rural communities seeking to identify central experimental aspects of a rural holiday, their behaviors, motivations, perceptions, emotions and attitudes. However, the rural tourism pre- and post-experiences are important issues for the study, analysed qualitatively, through visitor interviews, and quantitatively through a survey applied during one year in the villages, with direct administration in all seasons of the year, yielding a high response rate. Finally, on-going results are presented to local stakeholders for discussing their meanings and implications for developing sustainable rural tourism in the villages.

Conclusions
Tourists apparently come to the villages due to a dominating rural idyll, marked by the expectation of peacefulness and relaxation in a natural, pure, “authentic” environment. But they are also attracted by the network brands and their underlying themes. The visitors´ sensorial experience reveals a vivid imagery and involvement of all senses, closely linked to feelings of pleasant peacefulness, harmony and joy, likely to mark the experiences retained and later shared with significant others. Agriculture is not a main attraction, although local food and man-shaped landscapes are. Although not being the main attraction, interaction is appreciated by visitors, who may benefit from residents’ “cultural brokerage” (Cohen,1988) to learn more about the village, its life, history and traditions.
