Accommodation in student residences

A limited number of rooms (25) are available at the halls of residence for exchange students. These are reserved with priority for students in the following circumstances: 1) students from Universities with specific bilateral accommodation agreements with UA; 2) students with physical disabilities.

If you would like to live at the student halls of residence but do not find yourself in the circumstances described here, you may register for the waiting list by sending an e-mail to gri@ua.pt

Accommodation in the private sector

For students who do not live at the University residences there are other options. Many students share flats nearby the campus or in the city centre. The ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK, through its buddy programme, provides exchange students with lots of practical advice and contact numbers for students who want to rent a flat and, whenever possible, will accompany studetns individually when they are searching for a place to live, to help with the contacts with landlords.

Temporary accommodation

Because we cannot book private sector accommodation on behalf of students, many students make a booking at a guesthouse in town for the first few days of their stay (around 20€ per night for a single room is a reasonable price by Aveiro standards). Information on the various options available is available from ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK, which can offer cheap rates through its agreements with guesthouses in town.

Estate agencies

Most estate agencies in Aveiro do not specialise in student accommodation but they can be very helpful anyway. If you decide to contact an estate agency (in Portuguese; "agência imobiliária") you will be given the opportunity to view a range of student housing available in the city and if you choose to rent a flat through an agency you will sign a tenancy agreement. Please read your tenancy agreement very carefully and make sure you understand the details fully (ask the staff of the International Office of the University to help you understand the wording). Among other details, check that you understand the duration of the agreement, the implications of withdrawing from the agreement before the expiry date, the services that are included and your obligations regarding water, communications and energy contracts.

Note: Estate Agencies on the high street are more likely to be licensed establishments, however if you want to check, you can contact the Instituto da Construção e do Imobiliário, I.P. (InCI, I.P.), which is responsible for supervising this sector.
