biographical description

Manuel is the director of iBiMED. He holds a degree in Biology and a PhD in Biochemistry. He did his post-graduation studies in the United Kingdom (University of Kent), France (IBMC-Strasbourg) and in the USA (HHMI-Salt Lake City) and was awarded a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellowship in 1995 and an EMBO Young Investigator Award in 2001. His research has been funded by EMBO, HFSP, FCT-Portugal, ANR and the EU framework programs. Manuel created the Aveiro RNA biology laboratory in 2000, the national facility for DNA microarrays in 2004 and coordinates the GenomePT consortium since 2014.

research interests
Manuel´s research focus on the biology of protein synthesis fidelity. He is studying yeast and human tRNAs, RNA modifying enzymes and aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. Other studies focus on the role of codon decoding fidelity on protein aggregation and evolution of the genetic code. Deregulation of codon decoding accuracy has significant impact on proteotoxic stress and is associated with a wide variety of human diseases, including neuropathies, cancer and metabolic diseases. Manuel is investigating possible links between tRNA modification, protein aggregation and human disease. In yeast and fungi, codon ambiguity (mistranslation) leads to genome and phenotypic diversification and increases adaptation potential. Manuel discovered that mistranslation accelerates the acquisition of fungal drug resistance and he is investigating this process at the systems biology level.
