Dr.-Ing. Isabel Duarte is currently working as a researcher at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Aveiro. Her main field of interests are the processing and the mechanical characterisation of structures based on porous metals and metallic foams, and the study and modelling of physics of metal foaming. She received her Degree in Chemical Engineering by the University of Coimbra in 1992, her Master’s Degree in Materials Engineering by Instituto Superior Técnico in 1998, and her Ph.D. Degree in Sciences Engineering by University of Porto in 2005. She worked as a researcher in the materials science and engineering field in the Materials Department of the Instituto Superior Técnico and in the Department of Materials and Production Technologies of Instituto Nacional de Engenharia, Tecnologia e Inovação (ex-INETI, currently known as LNEG), from 1992 to 1994 and from 1994 to 2009, respectively. During this period, she was involved in research projects on the processing and characterisation of advanced ceramic materials (e.g. alumina, zirconia and silicon carbide) and metals (e.g. tungsten carbide-cobalt, aluminium alloy foams) having used different manufacturing processes (e.g. slip casting, hot uniaxial pressing, cold isostatic pressing, hot extrusion, reaction sintering). From 1998 to 1999, she worked as a Research Fellow (European TMR Grant Holder) in the Department of Powder Technology at Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Materialforschung (IFAM, Germany) with Prof. Dr. John Banhart in the metallic foam field. From 2003 to 2005, she worked as a visiting researcher in the University of Porto with Prof. Dr. A.J.M. Ferreira on her Ph.D. studies on the modelling of physics of metal foaming. As a visiting researcher, she has also been staying in some universities or research institutes both in Portugal and abroad (e.g. Hahn-Meiter Institute in Berlin) for short periods of time. Her main research on metallic foam field has focused on the development of equipments/tools for monitoring the evolution of the liquid metal foam in-situand for producing in continuous and an automatic operation components based on metal foam (e.g. sandwich systems, foam filled profiles and complex shaped structures) used in lightweight, energy-absorption and damping structures in different industrial sectors (e.g. transport and building construction industries).
