  2. Course objectives 

  • 2.1. General objectives

This course offers training in Portuguese as a foreign language at the A1 (beginners), A2 (elementary), B1 (intermediate) and B2 (intermediate) levels of the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (CEFR).

The objectives of the course are to provide the tools learners need to overcome linguistic barriers and to improve their Portuguese communication skills and their knowledge of Portuguese culture and Aveiro own (summer) sports activities (Zumba class and surf course, in different course options)

The teaching component will over a number of domains – language, culture, industry, tourism, architecture, history, etc. – with the aim of facilitating participants’ later integration into workplaces and Portuguese society as a whole. 

The sharing of linguistic, cultural, sportive and societal knowledge will help broaden personal and professional horizons and open up new opportunities, particularly for any future mobility students at the University of Aveiro (UA).

  •  2.2. Descriptors

By the end of the course, learners should develop productive, receptive and interactive written and spoken competences, according to their specific proficiency level, which, in general, will allow them to:

  • Understand and use different expressions and announcements, allowing them to fulfil specific communication needs.
  • Know how to communicate in various situational contexts.
  • Know how to use appropriate vocabulary and structures when communicating/arguing.
  • Write different typology of texts in Portuguese language.
  • Practise and consolidate the structures of Portuguese language.
  • Deal with tangible and intangible cultural topics pertinent to the Aveiro region.
  • Show openness and awareness of multiculturalism and multilingualism.

  3. Target public 

Any adult foreigner (for whom Portuguese is a foreign language) can apply to the 4SPIC’17 course, whether or not they are resident in Portugal, as may mobility students (Erasmus+ Exchange Students), whether or not linked to the UA.

Note: applications from citizens of countries where Portuguese is the official language will not be accepted.

  4. Course structure 

The 90 hours of the course are subdivided in the following way:

  • 60 hours in the classroom 
  • 22 hours of cultural or sport activities 
  • 8 hours of complementary activities (opening and closing sessions, plus certificate award ceremony and course dinner).

  • 4.1. Organisation of classroom activities 
  • The 20-hours per week classroom component will occupy the Monday to Friday morning slots (8:30 am to 12:30 am). 

  • The classroom component as a whole will be divided up in the following way: Portuguese language (24 hours), Oral Expression Workshop (13 hours), Written Expression Workshop (13 hours), Multimedia Laboratory (10 hours).

  • 4.2. Organisation of cultural activities 

The cultural activities will be designed in such a way as to allow participants to get to know something of the natural, tangible and intangible heritage of the city and region of Aveiro. Over the course, the activities will be distributed in the following way:

  • The first week will be given over to local art, history culture and architecture

- Saltpans, Moliceiro boats, Art Nouveau Walk (4 hours), Aveiro Museum and Cathedral (3 hours);

  • The second week will focus on the nautical and fishing history of the region, and water sports: 

- Museum of the Sea, Aquarium, Santo-André (ship) (5 hours).

- Secret Surf School: Surf class (4h)

  • In the third week, the industries and local companies of the region will be the focus: 

- Fábrica do Doce (4h);

- Zumba class (2h).

  •  4.3. Organisation of surf activities 

The sports activities will allow participants to get to know how to practice surf with lessons given by experts on a beach of the region of Aveiro. Applicants will be transported from the University to the training local (Praia do Labrego, in Vagueira) by the surf school bus. Every applicant will be given a swim suit and a board. Over the surf course, this activity will be distributed in the following way:

  • The first week will be given over to introduce Surfing modality to applicants, with training on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1:30 PM each afternoon (6h)
  • The second week will be given over to learn Surfing basic techniques to applicants, training on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1:00 PM each afternoon (8h)
  • The third week will be given over to improve Surfing techniques to applicants, with training on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 PM each afternoon (6h)

As a complementary sport activity, 4 SPIC students, that applied for the language and surf courses will also join the Zumba class (2h), by GimClube - Fitness Center.

  • 4.4. Organisation of Complementary Activities 

The complementary activities consist of:

  • the opening session: 26/08/2019, from 8:30 to 10:30 am (2 hours);
  • the closing session: 13/09/2019, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm (2 hours);
  • the course dinner: 12/09/2019, from 19:00 to 23:00 pm (4 hours).

  5. Assessment and Credits 

Under current UA regulations, this course will be assessed using the “discrete assessment” model. This involves from two to four separate moments  separate moments of assessment during the course. The course teacher is responsible for deciding the dates and time of these assessment moments. 

To obtain the course certificate, students must pass the course, in the terms defined by the teacher.

 Students who do not pass will be given a Certificate of Attendance, provided they have attended at least 80% of classes.

University of Aveiro Mobility (Erasmus+) students with 4SPIC in their LA will be awarded 6 ECTS

6. Applications

 6.1. Application schedule 

4SPIC’14 applications, confirmations and payments shall adhere to the following schedule:

  • enrolments: until 30 June 2019;
  • publication of the enrolment results (applicants selected, applicants students on the waiting list and applicants not admitted):  3 July 2019;
  • confirmation of place email sent to applicants who have been accepted on the course: 3July 2019;
  • course payment and email from applicant confirming acceptance of place: 3 to 7 July 2019;
  • applicants on the waiting list contacted via email , where places remain to be filled:  10 July 2019;
  • course payment and email from waiting list applicant confirming acceptance of place: 10 to 12 July 2019;
  • publication of definitive course lists: 17 July 2019.

Enrolments are only valid after central services have confirmed payment.


(1) Selected applicants are those who meet the requirements for participation in 4SPIC (see section 6.3). This selection depends on the number of vacancies on the course (see section 6.4). The applicants on the waiting list are those who meet all the requirements but have not been automatically selected because the maximum number of students has already enrolled in the course. These applicants may be contacted if a vacancy arises because one of the selected applicants drops out. Applicants that are not admitted are those who do not meet the requirements for 4SPIC applicants. 

(2) Payment details will be sent to selected applicants in their confirmation emails.

 6.2. Application Form 

All applicants wishing to apply for a place on the 4SPIC’18 summer course must fill out an application form.

No application sent after 30 June 2019 will be considered.

Please read the appropriate sections of this document carefully, before filling out the application form.

Once applicants have filled out the application form (electronically only), it should be sent to dlc-4spic@ua.pt  by 30 June 2019. Applications made in any other way will not be considered.

 6.3. Selection of applicants 

Once all applications have been received, the selection process will be carried out. The following criteria will be applied, in the order given:

 -application form correctly and electronically filled out;

 -applicants who will be mobility students at the UA in the 2019-2020 academic year;

 -applicants who need Portuguese for professional purposes;

 -gender balance;

 -geographical balance.

 6.4. Number of students per class 

To ensure that 4SPIC has the best possible outcome, the maximum number of students per group will be 20, and the minimum number will be 10.

   7. Price of the course 

         7.1. Options

There are four (4) price options for the 4SPIC course:

 Option 14SPIC Summer Portuguese Intensive Course (Classes and Cultural Activities) (90h)    420€ 
 Option 24SPIC Summer Portuguese Intensive Course (Classes and Cultural Activities) (90h) + Accommodation (21 days)   670€
 Option 34SPIC Summer Portuguese Intensive Course (Classes and Surf Course)   560
 Option 44SPIC Summer Portuguese Intensive Course (Classes and Surf Course) + Accommodation (21 days)   810

Note: The accommodation price corresponds to a 21 days reservation in a single room in the university residence, between August 25th and September 15th, 2019.

The amounts in the table apply to the 4SPIC summer intensive course only and may not be reimbursed or transferred to another course.

         7.2. Procedures 

In accordance with section 6.1 of these regulations, the ForLínguas Office will send all applicants the list of selected applicants, the waiting list of applicants and the list of applicants not admitted, on 3 July 2019.

The selected applicants will also be sent full fee payment details. 

Selected applicants should send an email confirming their acceptance of the place on the 4SPIC course. They should attach the proof of payment to this email, which must be sent before the deadline.

Any payments made after the date stipulated in the regulations will not be considered or serve as a guarantee of a place on the intensive course. Any such payments will not be reimbursable or transferrable (see section 7.1).

If the situation warrants it, the ForLínguas Office will contact the applicants on the waiting list on 10 July 2019.

Following confirmation of payment, the definitive list of course participants will be published on 17 July 2019, on the official website of the University of Aveiro’s Department of Languages and Cultures (www.ua.pt/dlc/4spic). At the same time, participants will receive an email from the ForLínguas Office listing the 4SPIC  class groups.

Note: Applicants should not make any form of payment unless they have received explicit instructions to do so from the ForLínguas Office. Any undue payments made will not be transferrable or reimbursable.

   9. Other information 

Applicants who want accommodation at the University of Aveiro should select the “4SPIC Summer Intensive course (90 hours) + Accommodation (21 days)” option 2 or option 4 (see section 7.1). Accommodation may only be occupied during the time of the course, that is, from 25 August (Sunday) to 15 September 2019 (Sunday).

Applicants who are to be offered UA accommodation will be contacted directly by the SAS Office, who will provide all the appropriate information.

During the course, 4SPIC students are welcome to make use of the UA’s infrastructures and services, namely: the canteens, the university restaurant, the campus bars, the library, the media library and the internet. Please note that university services only open after September 1st.
