Margarida Fardilha did a degree in Biochemistry in 1996 at the University of Porto, a PhD in Biology (2004) at the University of Aveiro, and is Invited Assistant Professor at the Aveiro Health Sciences Department.

research interests
Margarida is studying the role of the Phosphoprotein Phosphatase 1 (PPP1) in male-related disorders. PPP1 is one of the most conserved phosphatases and it is involved in several processes. The specificity and activity of PPP1 depends on its binding partners, known as PPP1-interacting proteins (PIPs). Margarida is particularly interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms associated with male infertility and prostate cancer and identify molecular targets suitable for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. Hence, she wishes to identify and characterize 1) PPP1 and PIPs interactomes in male reproductive-related tissues, using the Yeast Two-Hybrid system and conventional biochemical methods to validate protein interactions; 2) protein complexes that may be used as therapy targets or prognostic/diagnostic tools; 3) develop tools to target protein complexes. Her ultimate goal is to translate basic research knowledge to clinical applications.
