catarina almeida
biographical description

Catarina joined iBiMED as a Researcher in 2016. She has a BSc degree in Biology from University of Aveiro. She did her PhD in Immunology and Cell Biology at Imperial College London. After a short PostDoc at the IBMC - Porto she joined INEB, the Institute for Biomedical Engineering (2008 – 2015). In 2011 Catarina also spent some time as a visiting researcher at IBEC in Barcelona. .

research interests
Currently, Catarina is studying inflammaging and immunomodulation of innate immune responses. During her PhD she applied imaging technologies to study human NK cell Biology, with a particular emphasis on the immune synapse. Later, she performed interdisciplinary research to understand the interplay between the inflammatory response and tissue repair/regeneration in order to develop more efficient Regenerative Medicine strategies. She has discovered that NK cells can have a role in tissue repair by promoting recruitment of Mesenchymal Stem Cells. Also, she has analysed how the properties of 3D microenvironments affect the responses of macrophages and consequently MSC behavior. She is now interested in studying and manipulating the signaling pathways that drive the inflammatory response in innate cells.
