 research interests

The work developed during my career resulted on the advancement of knowledge on the molecular
mechanisms driving aging and age-related diseases. During my PhD, I was focused on how DNA repair proteins could act simultaneously in several repair pathways, providing explanations for the biochemical defects found within Xeroderma Pigmentosum patients. During my 4-years postdoctoral studies at CNIO, Madrid I chase my interests in disease and aging focusing on the pathways controlled by telomeres and telomerase and their role in tissue homeostasis and regeneration. During 2013 I moved to IMM-JLA, Lisbon, to the group of M. Carmo-Fonseca, where I obtained a 5-year competitive contract from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - FCT. At IMM-JLA I demonstrated how age-related barriers could be manipulated to facilitate the reprogramming of adult somatic cells.  Throughout my career I supported my research with competitive grants and received strategic grants from FCT and ERA-CVD totaling overall more than 700K euros. In 2018 I joined University of Aveiro, as an Assistant Professor / Group Leader at the Department of Medical Sciences / iBiMED, where I´m presently developing my career on the subjects of aging, cancer and stem cells.
