The objectives of iBiMED are to advance knowledge on topics of aging and ageing related diseases (ARD) where existing expertise, technology, research facilities and our research context allow us to make progress. We are committed to provide high quality advanced training for young researchers and improve health quality through research. To achieve results we have strong links with local hospitals, national and international researchers and we are applying our knowledge and expertise on cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, structural biology, systems biomedicine, bioinformatics, computational biology, biological networks and statistics to ageing processes, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, human fertility, metabolic, autoimmune, vascular and respiratory diseases. We have also a drug design, synthesis and screening program to identify new anti-ageing molecules. Research is supported by several shared science technology platforms, namely animal house, biobanc, confocal microscopy, genome sequencing, genome bioinformatics, proteomics, metabolomics, high throughput genetic screening and cell culture facilities, which are run by dedicated technical staff.

Our research program focus on the roles of genome and transcriptome chemical modification patterns, protein synthesis and protein aggregation on ageing and ageing related diseases. We are also investigating how lifestyle influences these biological processes, disease onset and responses to therapy. The iBiMED researchers are identifying genes, epigenetic factors, protein and metabolic networks that control protein synthesis rate, accuracy, modification, folding and aggregation and will evaluate their variation during ageing and in ageing related diseases. A clinical screen of the human population is being implemented in the context of a precision medicine research program to identify epigenomic, epitranscriptomic, protein synthesis and protein aggregation biomarkers of ageing and ageing related diseases.
