The Biological screening platform is fully equipped to carry out high density phenotypic screens based on high density parallel plating of yeast on solid agar media containing various growth substrates. It is supported by a liquid handling station (Caliper LifeSicences Sciclone ALH 3000 workstation) and semi-automated imaging systems to monitor yeast fitness.


It allows researchers to setup small and large-scale experiments in 96, 384 and 1536 well plates with various readouts, e,g., live cell assays, fluorescence and luminescence.

The platform is being used to identify gene interaction networks that regulate the proteotoxic stress response. It is also equipped for high content screening (HCS) of cell arrays by confocal and epifluorescence microscopy. This is supported by a Microgrid Compact (Biorobotics) robot that prints between 6000 and 10,000 cell features on activated glass slides surfaces. Cells arrays can be screened automatically using software for high content microscopy.

Data acquisition is automated using:
1) Biotek Synergy2 plate reader
2) Confocal Microscope – Zeiss LSM510

The priorities of the High Throughput screening facility are the following :
1) Genome-wide siRNA screens
2) Genome wide gene knock out screens
3) Chemical screens using collections of small molecule modulators.
