The cell culture facility operates in a Biosafety Level 2 containment environment. Good practice guidelines and standard operating procedures are in place to ensure that iBiMED scientists can confidently focus on their research projects. Authorized users are properly trained and subjected to practical and theoretical examinations on biosafety procedures. Quality control and guidance are also provided.

The facility is composed by 4 rooms with a total of six laminar flow chambers: two of these rooms are intended for general use; one is meant for primary cell cultures and quarantine; one other is reserved for viral infection purposes. The quarantine room receives cell lines for culture initiation and mycoplasma testing. Mycoplasma screening is additionally performed on a regular bases to ensure consistency of the cell lines used in the research projects.

A cell repository is managed by the cell culture team. The cell lines are cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen tanks and their information is kept on a database available to the researchers
